The conventional and most widely accepted view of the lottery is based around luck. One man however, disagrees.
Richard Lustig from Florida, has won 7 grand prizes over his lifetime, and argues that ‘luck’ doesn’t have much to do with it. Richard’s wins now total over US$1 million (before taxes), with the largest of his jackpot wins totalling US$840,000.
Richard’s wins include:
- US$10,000 – 1993 (scratch-off ticket)
- US$13,696 – 1997 (Florida Fantasy 5)
- Holiday trip to Los Angeles – 2000 (valued at $3,595) (“Wheel of Fortune”)
- Elvis Holiday trip to Memphis – 2001 (valued at $4,966) (scratch-off ticket)
- $842,153 – 2002 (Florida Mega Money)
- $73,658 – 2008 (Florida Fantasy 5)
- $98,992 – 2010 (Florida Fantasy 5)
“There is a method to my money making,”
Although Richard was good at maths in school, he never studied any extra, special maths course, and moreover, his method claims “not to have anything to do with any kind of maths solution”.
Some top tips from Richard:
Avoid ‘lottery fever’
It’s extremely important to know how much you can afford, and when to stop. He advises setting a budget to ensure that you don’t end up spending your rent or shopping money.
Keep to the same game
Once you have a budget, divide it by the ticket price, and buy as many tickets in a row, for the same game, as you can. Richard stresses “Do not split it out over three or four different games”.
Richard also advises players to pick their own numbers, and not to buy computer generated ‘quick picks’.
Finally, some closing words from Richard himself:
“One of the biggest things I stress is that luck has nothing to do with this. I believe most of the good things that have happened to me have been because I was methodical, I thought it through and approached it in a manner that I felt gave me the best chance.“
